African American Quilts Illustrated Lecture

On 25 February 2007, Eli Leon will examine prototypes from West and Central African cultures that show up in American patchwork at the Pasadena Museum of History. Traditional African pieced and stripwoven textiles are compared with improvisational African-American quilts on adjacent screens. Leon’s analysis of construction techniques, aesthetic ideals and key motifs supports the theory that fundamental characteristics of African-American patchwork — portable as “models in the mind” — survived the adversity of the African-American experience and maintained their vitality to the present time. Visit the “Experience LA” site for full details about this event.
