Members of the Western North Carolina Quilters Guild will host the annual North Carolina Quilt Symposium - “Bee in the Mountains” - in just a few months. The Symposium, which runs Thursday, 24 May – Sunday, 27 May 2007, will be held on the beautiful campus of Mars Hill College, just 20 minutes north of Asheville. Registration as a full-time participant includes lodging in a dorm and meals in the cafeteria right on Campus, allowing plenty of time between classes and lectures to spend some time on a work in progress or chatting with other quilters about favorite techniques. There will be a Fun Day ticket available for Friday or Saturday. It includes one lecture, lunch and entry to the quilt show. A ticket to the quilt show will be $4.00 for anyone who wants to see it (children under 12 may see the show free).
Brevard quiltmaker, Ginny Landwehr has attended the Symposium for many years. She says, “It’s a wonderful opportunity to partake in workshops and attend lectures with national and international quilt teachers along with meeting and developing new friends and visiting with old friends. Quilters are a wonderful and sharing group of people and it is a privilege to participate in the exchange of experiences and knowledge that they give to one another.”
The 4-day event features classes and lectures by 20 nationally recognized quilting teachers, a quilt show exhibiting the work of many talented quilters, and a merchant’s mall offering every imaginable quilter’s fabric and tool. It is designed for anyone interested in learning more about the art of quilting, from beginners to experienced artists. On the Guild’s website, www.westernncquilters.org, you can find a list of the teachers and links to many of their websites, where you will see photos and descriptions about the kinds of techniques they teach.
Raffle quilts are traditional for many quilters’ events. The raffle quilt for Symposium is an original design by Brevard quilt artist Tynne Karas. Its background, a collage of traditional quilt blocks, depicts the Blue Ridge Mountains. Fifteen window pane blocks are superimposed on the background, showcasing appliqués of native wild flowers from our region. A photo of it appears on the Guild’s website.
Registration will begin in January 2007. For the best shot at the classes you want, order a registration package now by sending $3.50, written to WNC Quilters, to WNC Quilters Guild, 100 Kindy Forest Drive, Hendersonville, NC 28739. A few weeks after the pre-ordered packages are mailed out, the complete registration package will be available for download from the Guild’s website. The registration package includes forms to register for the event and the quilt show and details about each class and lecture.
