An avid quilt collector, Diane Shink has lent 37 of her star-patterned quilts for an exhibition called “A Century of Star Quilts.” It’s at the Museum of Costume and Textile of Quebec in St. Lambert until March 23. Shink, who owns a collection of about 100 quilts - 59 in the star design - admits that when she stumbles upon a star quilt, “my heart beats faster.” After retiring from her work as a Montreal high school teacher, Shink devoted her free time to her passion for quilts. Extensive home study, numerous visits to quilting shows, and a final exam led to Shink’s becoming one of about 75 quilt appraisers in the United States and Canada certified by the American Quilters Society in Paducah, Ky.
Among her 37 star quilts on display at the museum, her own favourite is a colourful busy silk quilt with red ribbon trim. It dates to the last quarter of the 19th century. “It’s one of the best in my collection,” she said. Read the story to learn more about the show. Visit Diane’s site to learn more aobut her passions.
