Dear Quilters,
The 2008 Indiana Heritage Quilt Show is now in the record books and we are pleased that it will go down as record attendance. We had 4500 friends come to our party this year! We appreciate everyone who came to look at the quilts, shop at the vendors, and take classes.
Every year we think we must have the most beautiful quilts ever and this year was no exception. It truly was a magnificent show. If your quilt was one that was entered, thank you so much for sharing it with us. We wished we could have awarded them all ribbons.
I would like to say congratulations to all our winners. The judges certainly had their work cut out for them. The competition was very stiff. A special congratulations to our three top winners. Mary Buvia, our ‘neighbor’ from Greenwood, IN won Best of Show with a quilt that was truly breathtaking. I wish all of you could have seen it up close to appreciate all the workmanship that it contained. Linda Roy from Knoxville, TN won Best Workmanship: Hand Quilting. This was a quilt that could have been looked at all day and you would still find some different technique used in it. I don’t know how many hours it took Linda to create her quilt but I’m sure the total must be incredible. Elsie Campbell from Dodge City, KS took the top honors for Best Workmanship: Machine Quilting. Elsie has the ability to make magic happen with a needle down to a fine science. This quilt also was an amazing, beautiful piece.
A special thanks to all our teachers who brought their talents to us and shared with all their students. We also set records this year in class attendance and in the amount of time classes filled. We had some classes that were filled in less than a week! I’ve had several people ask me how they can get into the classes they wish to take. The suggestion I would offer: check the website for our 2009 teachers, go to their websites and see what kind of quilter they are and what types of classes they offer to get a feel for what you might be interested in, then when the brochures come and the website goes live be ready to send in your registrations ASAP. We fill the classes by the postmark dates so the early postmark gets the desired class!
For a show to grow it must be willing to change and expand. We did exactly this for 2008 by expanding our vendor mall. We had wonderful vendors both in the Convention Center and across the street at our new ‘Vendor Annex’. We would like to thank all our new vendors for being our guinea pigs as we worked out the kinks and problems that the first year for anything brings. We learned and will apply that knowledge next year so it will be better.
We also had good remarks from students on our new policy of allowing your class fee to admit you to the show for all three days. This seemed to work well for everyone. We do listen to your suggestions. We can’t work all of them into our policies but we do try to accommodate when we can.
And I certainly have to give a huge thank you to the IHQS Committee: Susan, Marita, Becky, Karen, Debbie, Bev, Nancy, Rob, Laura, Jane, Lynda, Wilma Nell, & Sherry. They work year round to get everything ready and done on time so the show can run smoothly. The work done behind the scenes is incredible and the show wouldn’t be possible without it. Also, a big thank you to Jamey our website guru. And to all our volunteers who step up and help out at the show.
Plans are already in the making for the 2009 show which will be March 5-7. It’s not too early to plan that quilt for entering next year. Nor is it too early to circle the date and make plans to come to the Indiana Heritage Quilt Show. We love to throw the party and want as many of our friends to attend next year as possible. Y’all come, y’hear!
Regards,
Cathy
